This season of Revenge has been as rocky as the dark seas by the Hamptons, but the second season finale, “Truth, Part 1” and “Truth, Part 2”, is an incredibly powerful, often emotional episode that proves to be a game changer in many ways.
Until the explosion that rocks Grayson Global at the end of the first hour it’s slow, mostly set up for a nonstop and engaging second half. The show makes an interesting choice in giving Takada his own revenge box. This season of Revenge seemed to be all about putting new twists on old stories and the realization that Takada has had his own agenda the whole time is a brilliant move by the writers. The last half of the season really refocused on Jack and Emily’s relationship and Emily’s admission to him that she is in fact Amanda Clarke gives the writers some very interesting directions to go in next season.
Most fans will go into tonight’s Revenge season finale knowing that one character won’t make it out alive. By the end of the second hour we know it is Declan. Even though he wasn’t the most liked character by fans his death has some truly devastating consequences. Not only is Charlotte now pregnant without him but it’s what pushes Jack and Emily together.
Nolan’s arrest is perhaps the most upsetting twist of the night. Making it worse is that Padma is the one to set him up with her posthumous video falsely accusing him of terrorism. Even dead she’s a pain. It makes sense now why the writers have been giving Nolan so much power and confidence this season- he’s heading into the fight of his life. Early in the episode it looks like Aidan will be the next David Clarke, but setting up the much beloved Nolan as a patsy for the Falcon, Aidan, and the Graysons is an ingenious decision for the writers. Nolan is the last character you expect to be sitting in an interrogation room.
The season finale leaves us with some truly frustrating cliffhangers. For one, did Daniel manage to kill Aidan in their vicious fight at Emily’s house? How will Charlotte react to Declan’s death? Who the heck is Patrick? With all the twists on old storylines, it’s only natural that the season finale would feature one finale twist that manages to right most of the wrongs caused by the Initiative storyline. Learning that Conrad was basically the Initiative the whole time and was behind the bombing gives much more power to his character.
The season finale of Revenge is an emotional and effective episode that manages to fix nearly every mistake that was made in season 2.
